Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Australia is a vast land, the bulk of our population, largely hugs the coastlines and major cities. Millions of square kilolmetres of uninhabited land, sprawls silently, from coast to coast. But this land is a sleeping giant. Beneath the surface of our deserts is a resource for renewable, clean energy, that has only recently been tapped and tested by a private company, “Geodynamics”, who have developed a very simple technology to tap the “Hot Rocks” that seethe deep below the surface. Australia is a very ancient land mass, but hidden in its depths, the deep, heated by pressure, rock layers, offer a brilliant free and clean solution to a renewable energy resource. Geodynamics has drilled into these

layers of hot rocks and experimented with pouring water into them. The water seeps into the natural cracks and crevices, is heated by the surrounding rocks and the steam is released to the surface via the drilled channels. The pressure of the steam released by large enough “chimneys” could be enough to soar thousands of metres into the sky. That is AWESOME power!The steam is piped to a nearby plant and drives turbines, thus creating electricity. The vapour and water is returned and recycled back into the rocks, thus creating a completely closed, clean, nonpolluting, continuously self- generated system.

We all hear the term global warming all the time. During recent months I have started to read travel stories how the permanent ice cap of Mount Kilimanjaro is melting, how ski resorts in the Alps are going to be closing permanently due to lack of snow fall, how glaciers are melting in the Arctic, how increasingly more frequent and severe weather disturbances are disrupting tourism, and on and on the stories go. Some of these stories even exhort us to go now before some of these scenic places will be transformed or gone forever. Climate change has now become an issue of concern for global travelers.

Global warming is a problem faced by our entire society . Regardless of race, ethnicity, homeland, gender, and age, we are all responsible for helping our planet through this tough time. Soon, global warming will reach a tipping point in which there will be nothing that we can do to stop its harmful effects. year on the planet. It has been shown that the average American contributes 6.6 tons of greenhouse gas per year. These emissions have only increased since the early nineties, and we need to act now to help save our planet?

It is now time for each and every one of us to make a positive effort to help reduce the impact of Global Warming on our good earth. The official cause for global warming has been unequivocally determined at the 2007 IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) meeting in Paris France. Established in 1988 by the the United Nations, the IPCC has just completed its 4th Assessment Report, which has established that global warming has been human-caused and for the most part greenhouse gases have been the largest contributor to the acceleration of global warming. Effects of global warming will definitely be experienced in this century.

Global warming is a phenomenon that is way beyond and over the level of awareness of the man on the street, but whose impact is felt by him wherever he is - in every nook around the world, in our very residences, in every geographical location in fact. Everyone is starting to feel its impact in our daily lives. Already there are indications of the sad plight of the earth’s climate in some areas of the US that are blessed with very good climate.

There is ample evidence of the effects of a changing climate in California, for example. Records show that in the half century that passed, temperatures in winter and spring have been warmer. There has also been a

recorded drop in the level of spring snow in low elevation to mid-elevation mountains. Blooms show up a couple of weeks earlier, while snowpacks are also melting earlier by 1 to 4 weeks. This is very much related to the worldwide increase of average temperatures by 1 degree Fahrenheit over the last 100 years. It is important to note that the US is the biggest contributor to air pollution that traps heat (CO2 emissions from cars, trucks and industrial plants) and causes global warming. Such kind of activities is projected to be the gauge at how much warmer the state’s climate will become as it is also a scientifically projected that California temperatures will rise by 4.7 10.5 degrees Fahrenheit in this century. If state laws and Washington declarations prevail, emissions could be cut and consequently contain the temperature rise to around 3 to 5.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
